Dutch Pavilion

Description

Why

Every five years, nearly every country on the planet represents itself at the World Expo. They do so by placing their own pavilions that tell their story in unique ways. This project was about designing a pavilion concept for the Netherlands during the Dubai World Expo 2020. The theme of the expo: connecting minds, creating the future.

What

For this concept, we took the theme of the Expo very literally. How can we connect minds to create the future? We decided that the presence of people had to affect what was happening with and in the pavilion. Therefore we took two very unrelated strengths of the Netherlands, 3D printing and water management, and combined them into a seamless and thought-out concept.

Results

The project made it to the finale and won the Meesterproeffinale Brabant-Oost 2019. The pavilion did not come to fruition. But, this project did inspire me to visit the Dubai Expo. Which I did three years later.

Learning points

This project was the first time that I got to spend time thinking and brainstorming about physical experience design and storytelling, as well as consider the user experience more carefully.

It is also one of my first projects supported fundamentally by a larger vision. The elements of bringing connection and collaboration between people in a physical environment still lie at the core of my vision today.
